Why Rules of Thumb Can Fail
You’ll see the same advice repeated online: bury a certain fraction of the post, space posts on a set interval. Those rules were built for a specific fence — a particular height, material and soil — and they quietly assume your property matches.
A short, low-wind privacy panel on clay and a tall open-mesh run on sandy fill are different structures with different loads. The same spacing that works for one can leave the other waving in a storm. Rules of thumb are fine for a rough conversation; they’re not an engineering basis for your fence. We treat them as starting points, then design around the actual conditions.
Fence Height and Wind Area
The taller the fence, the more surface it presents to wind, and the more work the posts have to do. A solid privacy panel catches the wind like a sail; open chain-link lets most of it pass. That difference changes post requirements even at the same height.
- Solid panels need more from their posts and foundations than open mesh of the same height.
- Taller lines in exposed yards — open lots, wide streets, pond edges — get more attention than sheltered runs.
- The top of the fence is the lever arm: small differences in height create outsized differences in load.

- Double gates double the hardware and the load, and their posts get their own specification.
