Quick answer: Cedar is commonly chosen for natural decay resistance, appearance, and dimensional stability, while pressure-treated pine can reduce initial material cost and uses preservative treatment to improve durability. That shorthand is not enough for a purchase. Species, grade, treatment category, board moisture, posts, fasteners, installation, drainage, finish, maintenance, and local availability can matter more than the generic “cedar” or “pine” label.

Explore complete wood fence systems before treating picket species as the entire fence decision. Posts, rails, gates, fasteners, and drainage often determine where problems start. Use the fence cost checklist to keep competing scopes equivalent without relying on unsupported prices.

“Cedar” and “treated pine” are not full specifications

Ask which cedar is proposed. Western red cedar, eastern redcedar, and other products sold with “cedar” in the name are not automatically equivalent. Within a species, grade changes the amount and type of knots, slope of grain, appearance, and allowable defects.

Pressure-treated pine also needs a complete description. Treatment is not one uniform feature. The preservative system and treatment level are selected for an intended use, and wood intended for one exposure should not be assumed suitable for another. The American Wood Protection Association’s treated-wood information explains why consumers should look for the end tag and use category. Follow current product and supplier instructions, including instructions for field cuts.

A proposal should identify the pickets or boards, rails, posts, cap and trim—not just say “cedar fence” when some structural components use another material. Mixed-material construction is not inherently wrong, but it should be disclosed so maintenance and compatibility can be assessed.

Warping, checking, and normal movement

Wood exchanges moisture with its surroundings. As moisture content changes, dimensions and shape can change. The U.S. Forest Service Wood Handbook provides technical background on moisture, shrinkage, checking, decay, fasteners, and finishes. It does not predict the condition of a specific fence.

Cedar is often favored for relative stability, but no species is warp-proof or split-proof. Treated pine can arrive with substantial moisture and may move as it dries. Results depend on board selection, storage, acclimation where appropriate, layout, support, spacing, fasteners, sun exposure, and how quickly the two faces dry.

Questions worth asking include:

  • Are bowed, twisted, badly checked, or damaged boards rejected before installation?
  • What board thickness, width, grade, and moisture condition are expected?
  • How does the design allow for movement while maintaining the intended privacy?
  • How are rails supported, and how are fasteners positioned near board ends?
  • What happens when a replacement board differs in moisture or appearance?

No design can guarantee that wood will remain gap-free or perfectly straight.

Rot and insects: use careful language

Natural durability and preservative treatment can reduce vulnerability under appropriate conditions, but neither makes a fence rot-proof or termite-proof. Sapwood and heartwood can behave differently. Cut ends, damaged coatings, fastener penetrations, soil or vegetation contact, and chronically wet areas may create different exposures within one fence.

Drainage is therefore part of the material decision. Look for sprinkler spray, low areas, mulch or soil buildup, vines, leaf accumulation, and posts or rails that remain damp. Correcting a moisture source can be more valuable than applying another finish over damp or deteriorated wood.

If there is suspected active insect damage, extensive softness, or unstable sections, avoid leaning on or disturbing the fence until it can be evaluated on site. This guide cannot identify decay extent or structural condition from a description or photo.

Staining and maintenance

Cedar and treated pine can both change color outdoors. A coating may help manage appearance and moisture exchange, but the right product and timing depend on the wood, previous treatments, moisture condition, exposure, and coating instructions. There is no universal “stain every X years” schedule.

Before coating:

  1. identify the wood and any factory or preservative treatment;
  2. inspect for damage and correct drainage or sprinkler problems;
  3. clean with methods appropriate for the wood and coating;
  4. allow the surface to meet the product’s preparation and moisture requirements;
  5. test appearance and compatibility in an inconspicuous area;
  6. follow label directions, protective-equipment guidance, and disposal rules.

Fasteners and treatment compatibility

Fasteners and connectors must be compatible with the wood, preservative treatment, environment, and each other. Some preservative-treated products require specific corrosion-resistant fasteners or connectors. Coastal-area humidity, wet landscaping, and dissimilar metals can add corrosion concerns.

Do not accept “exterior screws” as the complete specification. Ask for the fastener material or coating, connector details, product instructions used to select them, and whether cut or drilled treated surfaces require field treatment. Also ask how gates are framed and fastened; their moving loads differ from ordinary pickets.

Cost and availability without a false winner

Treated pine may have a lower initial material cost, while cedar may be chosen for appearance or stability. Neither statement determines total project cost. Grade, thickness, post system, rails, board pattern, cap and trim, fasteners, gates, demolition, access, finish, and maintenance can reverse a simplistic comparison.

Require written approval before a supplier or installer substitutes species, grade, dimensions, treatment, fasteners, or finish. Availability changes, and a same-day substitution should not silently change the expected system.

  • What exact species and grade are the boards, rails, and posts?
  • For treated wood, what does the end tag say about preservative, use category, and standard?
  • Which components are treated, naturally durable, or a different species?
  • What board dimensions and moisture condition are expected at installation?
  • Which fasteners and connectors are specified, and why are they compatible?
  • How are field cuts handled according to treatment instructions?
  • What coating is proposed, and what preparation and future maintenance does it require?
  • How will damaged or out-of-grade pieces be rejected and replaced?
  • What is excluded from the written scope?
